NutritionIs whey protein gluten-free? Written by Amy Golby23rd November 20216th January 2022 Asking yourself is Whey protein gluten-free? Well look no further, Whey protein is naturally gluten free as it is produced from milk, however, some whey protein powders may contain added gluten, making it important to check if you have a gluten intolerance. Additionally, you should consider the possibility of cross contamination, as the manufacturer may handle other products that contain gluten. Lots of whey protein powders contain ingredients such as flavourings, stabilizers and preservatives that contain whey so it’s important to check the label if you are intolerant. You can identify gluten free products quite easily by looking at the ingredients, and you can also look for products that have been certified by organisations such as the Gluten-Free Certification Organisation (GFCO). What is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Wheat is a grain and is found in bread, cereal and pasta. Barley may be found in beer, soups, snack foods and food colouring. Rye flour is used for baking and can be found in rye bread, crisp bread, rye grain, and pretzels. Gluten is often found in soups, sauces and salad dressings, so it’s important to double check the labels if you are gluten intolerant. Gluten Intolerance Those with an autoimmune condition called Coeliac disease will need to avoid products containing gluten, and it is also possible to have a non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). Some symptoms of gluten intolerance include: Constipation or diarrhoea Stomach ache Fatigue Bloating Headaches Joint Pain Nausea Brain fog Depression and anxiety Foods that do not contain gluten include: Fruit and veg Plain meat, poultry and fish Potatoes Pulses Rice Quinoa Gluten Free Protein Powder Whey concentrate, whey isolate, and hydrolyzed whey are all examples of proteins that are free of gluten. These are safe to consume if you are gluten free. When it comes to protein shakes, you should still check the ingredients as some may contain flavourings or other ingredients that contain gluten.
